Gail Segerstrom

Gail Segerstrom is a Sonora native whose career in communication arts spans thirty years. She studied English at Stanford University from which she also received an A.B. with Distinction in Fine Art. She went on to combine her interest in visual and language arts through publication design, most notably in New York City. For almost ten years Gail designed and art directed magazines: Adventure Travel, Inside Sports, Muppet Magazine, Wildlife Conservation, and Global Finance.

In 1989 Gail returned to Sonora where she lives with her daughter and runs her own design studio. Her work includes logo/identity systems, brochures, books, and illustration. Her clients are scattered from Tuolumne County to the East Coast. In addition, she taught for four years at the Sierra Waldorf School, has worked with the Central Sierra Arts Council as a designer, and served on the board of Stage 3 Theatre Co.

Gail’s publication design has received awards from Communications Art Magazine, Society of Publication Designers (NY), Edpress, Maggie Awards (Best Magazine of 1980), and Magazine Design & Production (1990 Bronze for Best Redesign, Nonprofit).

As designer of the California History Theater’s promotional pieces (poster, programs, newsletter, advertisements, and even some props), Gail’s interest in theater and education were captured. In the fall of 2002 she was an artist-in-residence for the Central Sierra Arts Council as part of the presentation to the schools of Rick Foster’s play, Dust Storm. In the spring of 2003, she joined the faculty of Columbia College as an adjunct instructor of desktop publishing.
